Book Review Magic on the Line by Devon Monk

Magic on the Line (Allie Beckstrom #7)

By Devon Monk

Review:

This is book number 7 in the series so if you haven’t read the previous six click here to find out what you’re missing, trust me on this – jumping in this late in the game will mess up your head.

Devon Monk writes a complicated magical world with delicacy. I never feel lost which just shows the subtleness of her writing skills. The action is fast paced and doesn’t stop until the last page, but again I never feel like I am drowning.

It is also a highly original world with magic taking a price and hounds tracing the user – I am always completely consumed every time I sink into one of the Magic books.

***SPOILERS***

This one starts with Chase’s funeral. Organised by Zayvion. At Allie’s ‘Den’… without her prior permission. Fans of this series will know that Chase is Zay’s ex; the love of his life before Allie and he is grieving big time. I have to say I was put out on Allie’s behalf. Thankfully Shame was there for her (Shame is brilliant!) but I would like to see some serious groveling about this in the future from Zay.

Portland is in a mess after the war at the magic well at the end of the last one and Authority man Bartholomew Wray steps in to clean up.

Things just go from bad to worse with innocents dying and the Authority refusing to help. The Veiled are acting freaky and it is down to Allie & co to sort Portland out.

Let’s just say I was satisfied with Allie’s final decision regarding the new head of the Authority. That girl kicks butt.

My rating: 5 bad boy’s *****

The next book is called Magic Without Mercy (I like the sound of that!) and is due out next April.

Blurb: Allison Beckstrom has willingly paid the price of pain to use magic, and has obeyed the rules of the Authority, the clandestine organization that makes-and enforces-all magic policy. But when the Authority’s new boss, Bartholomew Wray, refuses to believe that the sudden rash of deaths in Portland might be caused by magic, Allie must choose to follow the Authority’s rules, or turn against the very people for whom she’s risked her life.

To stop the plague of dark magic spreading through the city, all that she values will be on the line: her magic, her memories, her life. Now, as dead magic users rise to feed upon the innocent and the people closest to her begin to fall, Allie is about to run out of options.
